A visual artist and a master glassmaker are sought for the creation of the new stain-glass window of the western front of Nantes Cathedral.

Like Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris, Nantes Cathedral has been damaged by a fire in 2020. The french Ministry of Culture supports the restoration efforts.

A new call for applicants is launched by the State Secretary for Culture and Communication for the creation - design, production, installation—of the main stained glass windows of the Nantes Cathedral. It takes place on the western front—high bay and two bays of the triforium—of the monument.

Following the fire of July 18, 2020, the DRAC of Pays de la Loire—Ministry of Culture is organizing a call for applications aimed at a duo consisting of one or more visual artists and one or more master glassmakers.

Project management: regional directorate of cultural affairs, DRAC of the Pays de la Loire—Ministry of Culture; Affectataire: diocese of Nantes; Total area of the glass roof consisting of three bays: 48.40 m2; Funders: State—DRAC of the Pays de la Loire and the city of Nantes; Budget for the operation: 560,000 EUR excluding tax; For those not selected (three out of four) in phase two: 8,000 EUR.

Call for applications (market phase one) from April 29 to July 10, 2026 2:30pm. Accessible consultation rules and download of the specifications and appendices on SITE: here.

The project calls for a work that is contemporary, site-specific, and durable. It must respond to the monumentality of Nantes Cathedral, the perception of the windows from both inside and outside, the former location of the great organ, and the future reconfiguration of the west end. More than a technical replacement, the new stained glass should be an artistic intervention that contributes to the reading of the monument.

The proposed iconographic framework draws on Christian symbolism. While the choir faces east, toward the rising sun and the light of the resurrected Christ, the west window faces the setting sun and may evoke the Incarnation: the Son of God entering the human condition, in a downward movement.
